* This wiki was started on November 11th, 2012 so it is still very much in its infancy. Those of you who are experienced with MediaWiki sites please feel free to begin adding content, each page should not just information but a lesson on that particular subject with examples and practice problems if possible. Help pages are still being worked but it will all get filled for those of us who are not quite so experienced and need the extra help.
* '''Why MediaWiki?''' For Mathematics type websites MediaWiki has a great encoding system called LaTeX that allows you to format your typing in such a way that it will actually generate an image of a math problem that you otherwise would not be able to type out. This allows us to present problems just like they would look on paper. The help pages will contain more information on the LaTeX system when they are complete.

Hi Lessonsia, thank you for choosing ShoutWiki to make your wiki.
We would suggest that you start your wiki off by doing these few basic things:
*Upload a logo. You can do this by uploading an image over [[:File:Wiki.png]]. (not available on some skins)
*Design your [[Main Page]]. The main page is likely the first thing users will see. It should be attractive and catch the eye.
*Start building content. All wikis need content to become the best they can be.
If you need help with making a logo, skin or favicon, please see [[s:w:logocreation|ShoutWiki's Logo Creation Wiki]].
If you need any help with building your wiki, feel free to contact [[s:ShoutWiki Staff|ShoutWiki staff]] either via their talk pages or via [[Special:Contact]]. Alternatively, you can talk to us, or other users, via [[s:ShoutWiki Hub:IRC|IRC]].
Thank you again for using ShoutWiki.

==What is Arithmetic?==
Arithmetic contains the foundations of nearly all mathematical thinking. It is the most used branch of mathematics because it contains the basic function like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Arithmetic introduces us to a lot of the language of mathematical sentences and applies standards to our way of writing math so that is understandable by anyone who has taken an arithmetic course. Many people use arithmetic everyday, in their job or even just figure out what time it will be 3 hours from now.
==Why Should I Learn It?==
As I mentioned before most people use arithmetic everyday in some form. Without it you would not know if you were paying the right price at a restaurant or if your employer was paying you the right amount. The basics of it are unavoidable to function as a citizen in modern society.

==What is Arithmetic?==
==Why Should I Learn It?==
As I mentioned before most people use arithmetic everyday in some form. Without it you would not know if you were paying the right price at a restaurant or if your employer was paying you the right amount. The basics of it are unavoidable to function as a citizen in modern society.

The natural numbers are the numbers we use for counting starting at 1
<math>1, 2, 3, 4, 5...</math>
For every natural there is another that comes after it so they go on and on forever. There are natural numbers large enough to count every blade of grass in your yard.

==Grade School Math==
Most of us think of grade school math as arithmetic but there are several mathematical things that we learn in grade school that are not part of arithmetic. Enough in fact that we decided they needed their own special section. Remember that these are lessons for elementary school children at several different levels of metal maturity. It has been suggested that these lessons be broken down further into lessons for 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th then 5th through 8th. Go the this pages discussion page, link at the top, to let us know what you think.

==What is Pre-Algebra==
Arithmetic is the base for Algebra and Algebra is base knowledge that you need to do nearly every other form of higher math. As such it is important to get very thorough coverage of Algebra and we start with Pre-Algebra. Here many of the concepts and operations that you will come in contact with in Algebra are introduced and with a little more of an Arithmetic buffer than you will have in a more rigorous Algebra class. The pace is slower to allow more time to acclimate yourself to idea of letters in your numbers and the numbers you have to work with are generally easier. Many of the lessons that you have in Pre-Algebra you will see again in Algebra but there is so much to take in that the extra year of study is usually well worth it because you will be using these rules for many years to come.

==What is Algebra==
Algebra is taking observations and processes and presenting them in a mathematical nature, like an equation so they can be generalized and manipulated. Algebra gives the rules for manipulation and teaches how to solve from numbers we have to figure out like when you're planning your wedding and you know there are 200 people coming how many tables, that seat 8 people each, are you going to need? Algebra not only teaches us how to set up an equation for this but how to solve it. In this particular case you would only have to divide 200 by 8 and round up but there are countless situations that require logic of this nature that work with much more difficult numbers.

==What is Geometry==
Geometry is the study of structure and shape in our physical world. From measurements and angles to volumes and area, Geometry helps us define our world and is some of the first mathematical knowledge that we start to comprehend. Children at a very early age can redily identify circles, triangles and squares. Through primary school your knowledge grows to include cubes, cones, pyramids, shapes with more than 4 sides, perimeters and much more.

==What is Trigonometry?==
Trigonometry or Trig as it is often called, deals mainly with advanced mathematical functions like sine, tangent, Log and other complex operations. Trig is also often called Pre-Calculus because it covers some of the more advanced material that you will come in contact with in a Calculus course. A college algebra class will often spend a lot of time on Trig functions as well so it hits a very brawd spectrum of information.

Please follow the naming conventions for your links so that we can continue to have answers and questions available to students and no information gets overwritten that we don't mean to overwrite.

==Enhance Lessons==
Images are a great way to enhance lessons. Many situations can be more easily understood with an accompanying drawing or photograph. that being said the use of images is highly recommended on Mathematics but please make sure that they are you own images. Do not take them from published textbooks or websites that are not part of the public domain.

==Why are Naming Conventions Important==
The name that you see for the link might not be what the actual file name is because in a mathematics wiki based on lessons there are going to be a lot pages with the name "answers". Every exercise is likely to have answers on an accompanying page so we have to have a standard way of naming them so that everyone can have answers page without anything getting overwritten.

==Why are Naming Conventions Important?==
The name that you see for a link on a wiki is often not the actual file name. This is because there is a high likelihood that in any wiki there will be pages with the same name, or at least the same link text. This is extremely likely in a mathematics wiki based on lessons, There are going to be a lot pages with the name "answers". Every exercise is likely to have answers on an accompanying page so we have to have a standard way of naming them so that everyone can have answers page without anything getting overwritten. This wiki will use the slash method.
==Creating Pages==
The following sections will explain how to set up links to new pages in Mathematics Wiki.
===The Slash Method===
For the slash method each page will have some preceding information that explains where it belongs for example
<nowiki>[[Algebra/One_Step_Equations|One Step Equations]]</nowiki>
===Spaces in Page Names===
You probably noticed from the previous example that any spaces in page names are replaced with underscores.
